The Kalamos Hike Timing Planner works out exactly when to set off for the climb up the Kalamos monolith to the Panagia Kalamiotissa monastery on Anafi. The trail from the Zoodochos Pigi trailhead is 2.5 km one way (about 5.1 km round trip) with 370–450 m of elevation gain to a 460 m summit, the second-largest monolith in the Mediterranean after Gibraltar. Ascent takes 60–75 minutes (90 for first-timers) and descent 45–70 minutes. The drive from Chora to the trailhead is 9 km / about 15 minutes on fully paved asphalt, so any car or ATV keeps your CDW insurance valid. There is no water and no shade for the entire trail: carry 2.5–3 litres per person in July–August, 2 litres in May or September, and 4–5 litres total for an overnight stay; the summit cistern is untreated rainwater and must be treated as non-potable. Heat is the main danger — July–August midday can hit 35°C, so never hike between 12:00 and 16:00 and finish a morning climb before about 08:30. The meltemi wind funnels over the summit; the ascent is not recommended at Force 6 (around 22 knots / 40 km/h) and should be aborted at Force 7 or more, and it is calmest before 08:00. Sunrise from the summit rises over open sea to the east; sunset faces west toward Santorini, about 22 km away. Sleeping overnight in the monastery courtyard for sunrise is a tolerated quasi-pilgrimage tradition (the Feast of Panagia Kalamiotissa is September 7–8) with strict Leave No Trace inside the Natura 2000 zone GR4220002. The planner computes real sunrise and sunset for the chosen date at Anafi’s coordinates, with Greece on summer time UTC+3 until late October.
