Booking and Availability on Anafi Anafi has a very limited rental fleet. For travel in July and August, book ATVs 2-3 weeks in advance and cars at least 1 week ahead. During the shoulder seasons (May, June, September, October), booking 1-3 days in advance is usually sufficient. Most operators close from November to April. During the off-season, contact Manos Rent a Car or Giannis Moto Rent directly by phone to check for limited availability. The ferry schedule to Anafi drops to just twice a week in deep winter. The main local operators are small, family-run businesses. It is always best to call or email them directly for the most accurate availability. See our full list of all operators . Pricing and Payment Structure Prices vary significantly between low and high season. Expect to pay more in July and August. Multi-day rentals of 7+ days often receive a 10-20% discount. Anafi has a cash-first culture. While you can pay the final bill in cash, a valid credit card is almost always required to hold the security deposit as a pre-authorisation. Do not expect to rent a vehicle without a credit card in your name. Insurance, Coverage, and Damage The rental company will place a temporary hold (pre-authorisation) on your credit card for the insurance excess amount. This is not a charge; the hold is released after you return the vehicle undamaged. The amount is typically between €600 and €1,200 for cars. Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) is basic insurance included in the rental price. It covers damage to the body of your rental vehicle in an accident, but you are still liable for a high initial amount called the "excess". CDW in Greece never covers damage to the tires, windscreen, mirrors, or undercarriage exclusion of the vehicle. The excess is the maximum amount you must pay if the car is damaged. On Anafi, this typically ranges from €600-€1,200 for cars and €250-€500 for ATVs and scooters. You can usually purchase extra insurance, called Super CDW (SCDW), for €8-€12 per day to reduce this excess to zero. Standard insurance (both CDW and SCDW) is voided if you drive on unpaved roads due to the off-road exclusion. Any damage sustained on a dirt track is your full responsibility. Check our guides for road conditions and fuel and beach access by vehicle type . If you get a scratch or a dent: Contact the rental agency immediately. Do not wait until you return the car. They will instruct you on the next steps for documentation. Upon return, the damage will be assessed. If the repair cost is less than your excess, you will be charged the repair cost. If it is more, you will be charged the full excess amount (unless you purchased SCDW). Driver Licensing and Requirements Under Greek Law 4850/2021, drivers with licenses from specific countries do not need an International Driving Permit (IDP). All other nationalities must carry an IDP alongside their national license. Even if not legally required, some local agents may still ask for an IDP out of habit. It is a low-cost document that prevents potential issues. The minimum age on Anafi is typically 21. For example, Giannis Moto Rent specifies an age of 21. All renters must have held their driving license for at least one full year. In Greece, a standard car license (Category B) generally allows you to drive ATVs/quads up to 125cc. However, you must confirm this policy with your specific rental operator before booking. See a full comparison of vehicle types . Ferry Logistics and Transport You cannot bring a rental car from Santorini to Anafi on the ferry. Rental agreements from operators on other islands strictly prohibit taking vehicles on ferries. Doing so voids your insurance completely. The primary ferry that carries cars to Anafi is Blue Star Ferries. You can usually pick up your rental car at the port of Agios Nikolaos and drop it off in Chora. Anafi is very small, and rental companies are flexible. Arrange your pickup and drop-off locations when you make your booking. See more on port pickup details . Ferry delays are common, especially with high winds in the Cyclades. Inform the rental company of your ferry's name and scheduled arrival time when you book. If you learn of a delay, call them immediately to provide an update. They are accustomed to this and will arrange to meet you when you arrive. For planning, see our Santorini ferry strategy . Practical Island Driving There is only one petrol station on Anafi. It is located on the main road about 500 metres east of the entrance to Chora. Its opening hours are limited, typically only in the afternoon. Plan to refuel accordingly, especially before a long drive like the one to the monastery for the Kalamos hike . You cannot drive into the centre of Chora. The heart of Chora is a traditional settlement with narrow, pedestrian-only pathways. There are small designated parking areas on the main road at the edge of the village where you must leave your vehicle. If you experience a breakdown or emergency: Pull your vehicle to a safe spot off the road. Call the 24-hour emergency phone number provided in your rental agreement. For police emergencies, contact the Hellenic Police station in Anafi at +30 22860 61216.
